What is Gelato?
Gelato is somewhat like an Italian version of ice cream. While it is rich and creamy it is also softer than its American counter part. Gelato is thought to have been created during the 14th century while the Italian renaissance was happening. Its father is Bernardo Buontalenti, a famous architect and artist. Francesco Procopio, an Italian chef opened a restaurant in France where he served gelato. From there gelato began expanding across Europe. Finding its way into America in the 1770s, Gelato became a tasty sweet for many to indulge in. Gelato can be made in a sorbet form called sorbetto where water and fruit are mixed to create a refreshing fruity dessert. The other, more common way gelato is made is by mixing dairy with more indulgent flavors such as chocolate, hazelnut, and cinnamon. Today gelato is still a tasty treat for many around the world.
What is the difference between Gelato and Ice Cream?
Gelato
- Made in small batches daily - Served at 7-10 Fahrenheit causing it to melt in your mouth immediately - Churned at slow speeds to make it less airy and more dense 20-30% air - Contains 4-9% butterfat (natural fat in dairy products) - Less butterfat and higher serving temperature allows the flavors to be enhanced more than ice cream -Served with a spade |
Ice Cream
- Can be stored frozen for months - Served 10-15 Fahrenheit lower than gelato - Churned faster to add air and increase volume -Up to 50% air - Required to be at least 10% butterfat although usually between 14-25% -Served with a scoop |
Best Gelato in ItalyAfter eating gelato for 30 days straight, sometimes twice a day, I am happy to share my favorite gelato places. The two places that tied for first are..... (drum roll)....... Cremeria Funivia in Bologna and Gelateria La Romana in Verona. The flavors were amazing and unique and the gelato was creamy and sooo delicious.
