The Bar
The History of CoffeeWhile coffee has been around since the 15th century coming from Egypt, the espresso was originally invented by Italian business owners to reduce the time working men spent on coffee breaks.
Now coffee bars are enjoyed by all Italians and they are as vital as water. Coffee is so important in Italy it is unmentionably cheap because they believe it should be enjoyed by everyone. |
Traditions & EtiquetteIn an Italian coffee shop there are many rules for the bar, listed below are a few:
1. Always know your order 2. Never sit at a table unless ordering food 3. Espresso can be ordered all day since it can be used as a digestive after a meal 4. Cappuccinos should not be ordered after noon 5. There is no such thing as white chocolate mocha or any other flavor...try Cocoa powder or brown sugar instead! 6. It is very rude to pay a coffee with something other than cash My Coffee in Italy |
Old & New Types of CoffeeThe original Italian coffee is of course the Espresso. An Espresso can be taken with or without milk and is typically served with a shot glass of water for the strong taste.
The Cappuccino and the Macchiato are the most typically ordered but on a hot day you can look for a Cafe Shakerato or Cafe Crema. Regardless of the coffee you prefer, step out of your comfort zone and try something local, you just might love it. |
Coffee is a beverage enjoyed all over the world with changing customs and flavors everywhere you go. When in Italy, sit at the bar and observe your surroundings, you might find that the coffee etiquette is really obvious. Remember to talk to the barista when you get a chance, it might be one of the most beneficial relationships you form, especially when you find you're missing a couple cents or simply having a bad day.
My favorite thing to do in Italy is find a nice bar and become a regular, soon you will hear your name shouted when you pass the shop (BUONGIORNO SOFIA!) and your usual coffee will be on the bar ready when you arrive.
Overall, the coffee culture in Italy is really intimate, its where people share the local news and meet the people of their community, it is one of my favorite parts of Italian culture, and I hope you find these tips beneficial!
